This happened with my neighbour’s aunt.
We stay on the outskirts, where the government provided us with houses in Indiramma Colony. In the same colony, there was an aunt named Lakshmi, age 48, who works as a maid in houses. Her husband used to be an auto driver but passed away a couple of years ago. His auto remained parked in front of her house for many days.
Since I couldn’t complete my education, I decided to drive an auto, but my parents couldn’t afford one, and I couldn’t get a loan. I approached her and said I needed the auto and would pay a daily rent of ₹300. She replied that there was no need for money; I just had to ensure it stayed safe, and she handed me the keys.
When I told my mom, she insisted I return the keys immediately because Lakshmi used to shout at everyone in the colony, and everyone had a negative impression of her. I asked my mom why Lakshmi had spoken softly to me, hadn’t denied my request, and even said I didn’t need to pay. I started driving the auto, and things went well.
Even though she refused money, I tried giving her ₹3,000 for the first month. She said it wasn’t necessary. I replied, “This is less than what I initially offered; please accept it.” But she declined again. I asked if there was anything I could do to help, and she said she would let me know if she needed anything.
A few days later, she called and said she needed some groceries, sending me a list on WhatsApp. I asked if it was urgent. She said I could get them when I came home. I picked them up and gave them to her. When she asked how much they cost, I said it was okay. She tried to force me to take the money, but I refused and walked away.
